Measuring Curtains & Sheers

Measuring within an Architrave

If you want your curtains or sheers to fit at the window’s architrave, we will make them to your exact measurements with no deductions.

Measure as follows:

  • Width: Measure the width from the outer edge of the architrave, left to right.

  • Height: Measure the height from the top of the architrave to where you want the curtains to finish.

  • Track: The track’s length will be the same as your window’s width, and the height will be included with the curtains — no need for deductions. When we place the order, we will reduce the track’s height. If you’re using your own track, you’ll need to reduce the track’s height when measuring for us.

Measuring outside the frame

If you want your curtains or sheers to fit outside a window recess with no architrave, overlapping on all sides.

Measure as follows:

  • Width: Measure the width from left to right, exactly where you would like the curtains to overlap. To minimise light leakage, we recommend overlapping the window recess by at least 150mm to 250mm on each side. If the window frame almost reaches the wall, you can also do wall-to-wall coverage, which is even better.

  • Height: Measure the height from where you would like the curtains to start, down to where you'd like them to finish. If you’d like the curtains fitted as high as possible, please check whether there is a cornice at the top.

  • If your house has a cornice, measure from just under the cornice to where you want the curtains to finish.

  • If your house has no cornice, measure from the ceiling to where you want the curtains to finish.

  • Track: The track’s length should be the same as the curtain’s width.

Measuring within a Bay window

  • Face fitting

If you would like to do face fitting for a bay window, treat the whole bay as one big window and measure the width and height as above.

  • Recess Fitting

If you would like to do recess fitting for your bay window, the curtains will be fitted inside the window recess. Measure in three places for both the width and the height. Use the smallest measurements.

No need to take any deductions. We will deduct 10mm from the width and height to ensure a perfect fit.

Suggestions

For Curtain or Sheer Width

If you would like the curtain to block more light, when you measure your window frame’s width, make sure to extend at least 200mm on both sides of the window.

For the fabric, we will use at least two times the width you measure.

For Curtain or Sheer Height

Curtains or sheers can be hung on the ceiling, under the cornice, or at the top of the window frame. The finished length should be to where you want them to end.

Curtains or Sheers with Tracks or Rods

  • If you like the curtain or sheer hung with a track, the width you measure will be the same as the track length.

  • If you like the curtain or sheer hung with a rod, make sure there is enough space for the rod’s end caps — about 10cm on each side. For example, if your window frame’s width is 1500mm and one side ends at a wall, that means when we measure, we need to reduce one side’s width by 100mm. In this case, we would recommend using a track instead of a rod, as it will help reduce light leakage.

Measuring Indoor Blinds

Understanding Your Blinds

Before deciding on a design, it’s important to understand how you want your blinds to be fitted. Generally, blind fitting can be categorised as either face fitting or recess fitting. The diagrams below are designed to help you understand the difference between the two, with the blue section representing the window’s architrave (frame), the filled red shape representing the installed blinds, and the striped red area showing the coverage provided by the blinds.

Face Fitted

Face fitted blinds are mounted outside the window frame, usually on the architrave. A face fitted blind will generally be larger than a recess fitted one.

Recess Fitted

Recess fitted blinds are mounted inside the window frame and are made to fit within the architrave. This style has a slight light gap around the outer edges. Not ideal for full light blockage in rooms such as bedrooms.

Face Fitting

Ensure the chosen frame design and louvre rotation are suitable. Measure to either the outside edge of the architrave or to the point where you intend the framing to end.

  • Width: Measure in three horizontal positions: top, middle & bottom. Then, write down the smallest measurement.
  • Height: Measure vertically on the left, middle & right. Then, write down the smallest measurement.

Recess Fitting

Ensure the chosen frame design and louvre rotation will work. Measure to the inside of the architrave or square set of the window.

  • Width: Measure in three horizontal positions: top, middle & bottom. Then, write down the smallest measurement.
  • Height: Measure vertically on the left, middle & right. Then, write down the smallest measurement.

Depth requirements

For recess fitted blinds, a minimum recess depth is required to install the product.

Product Minimum’s Depth
Vertical blind (30mm) 40mm
Vertical blind (50mm) 80mm
Venetian blind 60mm
Roller blind 60mm
Zebra blind 70mm
Panel glide blind 90mm

Honeycomb blind 70mm
Curtain and sheer 50mm

Depth Requirements

  • For recess fitted blinds: Check that your recess is deep enough to fit the blind (at least 75mm), keeping in mind any obstructions such as screws, handles or anything else that may affect installation. Furthermore, if the top or both vertical sides are uneven, there may be a gap.
